Sleep is a blessing from Allah . The Prophet Muhammad  taught us not only the importance of rest but also the duas (supplications) and etiquettes to follow before sleeping, upon awakening, and even when experiencing bad dreams. These Sunnah practices ensure that a believer’s sleep becomes an act of worship, a shield from Shaytan, and a source of peace.

In this guide, we will cover:

  • Dua before sleeping
  • Dua after awakening
  • What to say after bad dreams or sudden awakening
  • Sleeping manners in Sunnah
  • Reciting Ayat-ul-Kursi before sleeping and its benefits

By adopting these practices, Muslims can strengthen their faith, protect themselves from evil, and ensure they start and end their day with the remembrance of Allah

Ayat-ul-Kursi Before Sleeping

One of the most powerful protections before sleeping is reciting Ayat-ul-Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:255).

The Prophet (PBUH) said
“Whoever recites Ayat-ul-Kursi before sleeping, Allah will protect him and no devil will approach him until morning.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 2311)

Ayat-ul-Kursi Text

Transliteration:
Allahu la ilaha illa huwa, al-hayyul-qayyum.
La ta’khudhuhu sinatun wa la nawm.
Lahu ma fissamawati wama fil-ard.
Man dhal-ladhi yashfa‘u ‘indahu illa bi-idhnihi.
Ya‘lamu ma bayna aydihim wama khalfahum.
Wa la yuhituna bishay’in min ‘ilmihi illa bima sha’a.
Wasi‘a kursiyyuhus-samawati wal-ard.
Wa la ya’uduhu hifdhuhuma.
Wa huwal-‘aliyyul-‘azim.

English Translation
“Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all.
Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him.
To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth.
Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission?
He knows what is before them and what will be after them,
and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills.
His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth,
and their preservation does not tire Him.
And He is the Most High, the Most Great

Dua Upon Sudden Awakening at Night

If someone wakes up suddenly at night, there is a powerful dhikr (remembrance) taught by the Prophet ﷺ.

Transliteration

Translation:
“There is no god but Allah, alone, without any partner. To Him belongs sovereignty and praise, and He is over all things capable. Glory is to Allah, praise is to Allah, there is no god but Allah, Allah is the Greatest, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.”

Whoever recites this and makes dua, his dua will be accepted. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1154)

Sleeping Manners in Sunnah

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught many manners of sleeping that Muslims should follow:

  1. Perform Wudu before Sleeping – It is recommended to sleep in a state of purity. (Sunan Abu Dawood 5046)
  2. Lie on the Right Side – The Prophet ﷺ used to lie on his right side. (Sahih al-Bukhari 6312)
  3. Place Right Hand under the Cheek – A Sunnah practice before dozing off.
  4. Shake off the Bed Sheet – To ensure cleanliness.
  5. Recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq, and Surah An-Nas – Blow into the hands and wipe over the body for protection. (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017)
  6. Avoid Sleeping on the Stomach – The Prophet ﷺ disliked this position. (Sunan Abu Dawood 5040)
  7. Make Dua for Others – Sleeping is a time of vulnerability, and remembering others in dua is rewarding.

By following these Sunnah sleeping manners, one’s rest becomes a form of ibadah (worship).

The Importance of Dhikr Before Sleeping

Engaging in dhikr before sleeping ensures that the last words on one’s tongue are the remembrance of Allah. This habit leads to peaceful sleep and protection from nightmares.

The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever goes to his bed in a state of purity, remembers Allah until sleep overtakes him, he will not turn over during the night and ask Allah for something of this world or the Hereafter, but it will be granted to him.” (Musnad Ahmad 10671)

Conclusion

Sleep is more than just physical rest; it is a spiritual state where the soul temporarily leaves the body. Islam beautifully guides us with duas before sleeping, upon awakening, after bad dreams, and Sunnah etiquettes that transform our sleep into worship.

  • Before sleeping, recite Bismika Allahumma amootu wa ahyaa, Ayat-ul-Kursi, and the last three Surahs.
  • After waking, praise Allah with Alhamdu lillahil-ladhee ahyaana…
  • After bad dreams, seek refuge in Allah and change sides.
  • Follow Sunnah manners, such as sleeping on the right side, performing wudu, and engaging in dhikr.
  • Recite Ayat-ul-Kursi, the greatest verse of the Qur’an, for protection and peace.

By adopting these practices, a Muslim’s night and day become filled with barakah (blessings) and divine protection.
